Pangea Partners With CIFORD Kenya to Help Eradicate Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

Pangea is very excited to be awarding a second year grant to CIFORD (Community Initiative for Community Development), in Meru, Kenya. Under the direction of an inspiring leader, Margaret Ikiara, this organization is doing exciting work in eradicating Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). A significant percentage of the $9500 grant they receive from Pangea will go toward continuing their FGM program which has been having a very positive impact in their community.

CIFORD’s programs mimics the traditional rite of passage that ends in FGM with an alternative, 6 day retreat  that focuses on all aspects of reproductive health, the importance of education and the role of women in Kenyan society. Each of these retreats includes 60 girls and is followed by a celebration that includes the entire village.

When the program first began, CIFORD encountered strong resistance from the traditional attitudes that couldn’t consider change. Now, both parents bring their daughters to the workshops and join in the celebration afterwards. There are many more girls wanting the workshop then there are places for them and lately CIFORD has been receiving requests to create a comparable retreat for boys. Pangea’s grant will fund two workshops for a total of 120 girls.
