2006 Grants
To be considered for a Pangea grant, programs had to meet one of the following criteria:
  • Latin America:  water projects to improve access or quality; education on issues related to water access and quality; income generating activities; capacity building activities for current or past grantees.

  • Africa: projects to support education and/or help communities cope with the HIV/AIDS pandemic, specifically programs to provide support to extended families or community-led groups caring for children whose parents are sick or deceased; programs to address living conditions (water, sanitation, food production, nutrition) that promote good health and well-being; HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention programs;

The following organizations were chosen to receive grants:

Jubilee House Community (previous grantee, Nicaragua) will organize and facilitate an exchange between the COMAMNUVI sewing cooperative and worker-owned cooperatives in El Salvador and Mexico to transfer skills and provide training on how to establish themselves as a free trade zone.

Ark Foundation of Africa (Boko, Tanzania) will construct a water delivery system to bring water from the nearest municipal district distribution point to the One Stop Center for Vulnerable Youth (roughly 4 miles away).  The water system will benefit the 200 children who attend classes at the center, as well as 150 low income families who live nearby.

Common Ground Program (previous grantee, Kitale, Kenya) will provide school fees for 14 orphans to attend Pathfinder Academy which serves 293 vulnerable children, install new cookstoves in the school kitchen, equip a new girls dormitory, and provide training in economic development activities and bio-intensive farming.

East African Center (Vutakaka, Kenya) will build a health and education center to provide learning opportunities for adolescents who have dropped out of school.  The center will also be used to provide tutoring for students still in school, and HIV/AIDS education programs for the community.

Rabour Village Project (previous grantee, near Kisumu, Kenya) will continue and expand the sunflower oil production and dairy goat herd established with a 2005 Pangea grant.  This project has improved nutrition for the orphans served by the village nursery school, generated income for the 40 women who participated, and provided employment for village youth.  This year's grant will double the production, develop a commercial outlet for the oil, and provide veterinary care for the growing goat herd.

St. Margarita Development Project (previous grantee, Riawi, Kenya) will purchase a tractor and two plows to expand the horticulture program started with a 2005 Pangea grant.

Teens Against AIDS (previous grantee, Tanzania) will continue and expand the HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention program among the Masai in northern Tanzania.  As part of this work, they will conduct a new workshop on the importance of girls' education, and assist the Masai as they finish construction of a nursery school and community center on remote Masai land.
